Rolex Explorer
The Rolex Explorer model series can look back on an eventful history and is a monument in watch form to all the explorers and discoverers of this world. The Oyster Perpetual Explorer and Oyster Perpetual Explorer II are the result of a symbiosis between watch development and research. The Swiss company has been developing its watches in collaboration with scientists under real-life conditions since the 1930s. The focus was on crucial characteristics such as the reliability of a watch and its legibility even under adverse conditions. The Rolex Explorer fully lives up to these high standards right up to the modern day.
Rolex Explorer I: Created for Mount Everest
The Rolex Explorer I was specially manufactured for the first expedition to Mount Everest in 1953. Its most outstanding feature is therefore its resistance to particularly cold temperatures. The famous mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary received the watch from Rolex in order to be able to rely on a reliable timepiece even under the extreme weather conditions on the world's highest mountain. In addition to its reliability, the Rolex Explorer I was also characterised by its robustness and comprehensive functionality. Stylish and simple, this luxury watch has also been able to establish itself on the market. To this day, the Explorer is valued by enthusiasts as a reliable partner on the wrist.
Rolex Explorer II for cave exploration
The Rolex Explorer II was launched a few years later especially for speleologists. A 24-hour display was added to this model.
Design of the Rolex Explorer
The striking appearance of the Rolex Explorer with the legendary Mercedes hands and the Roman numerals at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock as well as the three-row Oyster bracelet in combination with the stainless steel case is still very appealing today. Thanks to the Paraflex anti-shock system, even massive shocks cannot harm this watch and water depths of up to 100 metres pose no challenge for the Explorer. In terms of colour, the Rolex Explorer is available in classic versions with a black, white or grey dial. The case and bracelet are selectively accentuated with gold.
Price of the Rolex Explorer
The price of a Rolex is always a decisive purchase criterion. As with many other editions and model series, it is primarily the vintage editions and older watches that can fetch very high prices.
Prices for used Rolex Explorers start at 5,000 euros. There seems to be no upper limit, even for more recent editions, but the most popular range is between 5,000 and 9,000 euros.
