The perfect interplay of Italian design and Swiss watchmaking is the basis for the robust and visually appealing Panerai Luminor with its patented crown protection bridge. The model has its origins in the Panerai Radiomir, which was designed for the Italian Navy.
The Panerai Radiomir was developed with a high priority in 1936, primarily for Italian combat swimmers. The watch with the screw-down winding crown and the screw-down case back was particularly water-resistant, even at great depths. It was characterised by very good legibility, as the luminous markings and hands were clearly visible on the dial even in very poor lighting conditions.
This was thanks to the "Radiomir" luminous material that gave the Panerai watch its name. However, the mixture of zinc sulphate, mesothorium and radium bromide specially developed by the company turned out to be highly radioactive and was replaced by a different luminescent material in 1960. This was Luminor, which was to give its name to the successor model.
Until the 1990s, Panerai watches were manufactured exclusively for the navy. It was not until 1993 that the company ventured into the retail market and the Panerai Luminor, together with the Luminor Marina, was one of the first on the market. Due to its striking design, high resistance and outstanding functionality, the watch developed into a coveted collector's item with a high increase in value. In the meantime, the Panerai Luminor has achieved a certain cult status and inspires enthusiasts all over the world.
Despite its history, the Luminor is a modern timepiece with an appealing design. The dial, which is usually dark in colour, can be varied in some models with a white or lighter blue. The characteristic crown protection bridge emphasises the extreme robustness of a watch whose case size can vary between 40 mm and 47 mm. Nevertheless, every Panerai Luminor has a sporty appearance which, in combination with the matching bracelet, becomes an eye-catcher for the wearer.
The prices of the Panerai Luminor vary greatly. Initial models are available for just over €3,000, but most watches cost between €8,000 and €15,000. Special models of the Panerai Luminor can cost well over 20,000 euros and are certainly a good investment.
